East Lake Park: A Senior-Friendly Destination for Relaxation and Activity

Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is home to the Mount Pleasant Regional-Faison Field Airport, which has been part of the recreational flying community for years. Plus, it's in close proximity to Charleston International Airport, bringing travelers in from all over the world.
But if you're lucky enough to live in Mount Pleasant, then you won't have to go far to enjoy its attractions. For example, there's East Lake Park, one of the most senior-friendly parks around.
Are you interested in hearing what outdoor activities for older adults are available here? Then, keep reading. We'll go over everything the park has to offer.
Walking and Nature Trails
If you're into nature and wellness, then you won't be disappointed here. The park features one of the easiest walking trails in Mt. Pleasant, which loops around the 6.5-acre pond for a scenic walk in a tranquil environment.
Because they're paved, the paths are wheelchair-friendly. They're also ideal for those with mobility concerns.
While walking around, make sure to keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife. The trail offers opportunities to spot local birds, turtles, and more!
Fishing
While walking around the huge pond, a thought may cross your mind: Can you fish here? Luckily, the answer is yes!
Do note that you'll need a valid Iowa fishing license for those 16 and older. Seniors may be eligible for discounted or even free fishing licenses.
With that said, the pond is stocked with fish such as bluegill, bass, and catfish. Obviously, it's a great spot for casual fishing!
If you're worried about comfortable fishing, then don't be. There are designated areas where you can fish from the shore or benches.
Outdoor Fitness Equipment
We can't stress how important senior workouts are, especially since they improve not only your physical health but your mental health too. But working out indoors can be boring, and you might lose motivation fast.
A fantastic alternative is to work out in East Lake Park. There are 10 different fitness machines spread throughout the park, including:
- Balance boards
- Leg press machines
- Stretching bars
The best thing is that the equipment is designed for gentle exercise, making it perfect for seniors who want to stay active without overexerting themselves. Plus, you'll get fresh air and vitamin D, which benefits bone health!
Tennis and Pickleball
Tennis and pickleball are both excellent sports for seniors who are on the more active and fitter side of things. If you find tennis too intense though, pickleball can be the better choice, as it's a low-impact sport. Both can help with coordination, balance, and social interaction.
The park has four lighted tennis courts that can be used for both sports. This means that you can play during cooler evening hours if necessary.
Just make sure that you stay properly hydrated to avoid issues.
Horseshoe Courts
Even if you've never heard of the outdoor game horseshoe before, it's not a problem. The game is simple, meaning it's easy to learn. All you need to do is make light-throwing motions, so it's ideal for seniors with varying levels of mobility.
In this light yet fun game, you can spend hours being engaged. You might even meet other seniors and form unbreakable bonds.
East Lake Park has nine horseshoe pits available, so the chances are low that you won't be able to play when you head over to the park. You can choose to play casually or competitively, too.
Disc Golf
Don't have the energy to play a game of real golf? Then try disc golf instead. It's a fun and casual alternative, plus it has health benefits still.
A major benefit of disc golf is that there's no heavy equipment needed. You only need a disc (aka a frisbee), and the course is already set up for you to play on.
While playing this easy and accessible game, you'll have a nice time seeing the sights of the park. You can also play at your own pace while enjoying friendly competition with your friends.
Driving Range
Those who want to up their real golf game will be pleased to know that there's a driving range at East Lake Park. It's open from April to November from sun up until sundown. In addition, it's closed every Wednesday from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm for facility maintenance.
What's great is that practicing your swing is very affordable here. A basket of 45-55 balls costs just $3, and you can go at your own pace.
By spending time at the driving range, you can improve your coordination while getting low-impact exercise.
Softball and Soccer Fields
Usually, these fields are used for leagues. However, when there aren't games in play, you can do walking exercises or group activities.
If you're a fan of these sports, you can watch community leagues and youth games from the bleachers too. Cheer on the local teams for an exciting time!
Shelters and Picnic Areas
After you've participated in safe outdoor recreation for seniors, there are plenty of places to rest and eat. More specifically, there are two shelter houses and a gazebo with picnic tables. Whether you want to have an outdoor lunch or read a book comfortably, you'll have lots of space.
There are also clean and accessible restrooms nearby, so you won't have to go far to use the toilet and wash up.
Are you having a large gathering or party soon? Then, be aware that you can reserve the shelters for personal use.
Spend Time at East Lake Park
East Lake Park is definitely an excellent destination for seniors to visit in Mount Pleasant. Not only can you exercise and admire nature, but you can also socialize with other seniors.
The park has plenty of trees and covered shelter to get relief from the sun, and you'll find strategically placed benches and rest areas too. As a result, your outing won't be tiring.
